Wine Health Benefits
Wine is used in many festive occasions to raise a toast, or to enhance a good meal. But, are you aware that the wine can also be beneficial to your health? It’s true. Medical studies have shown that a glass of wine can be beneficial to your health, particularly the elderly.
You may or may not have heard of the “French paradox”. This finding shows that the French have a lower incidence of coronary disease as is found in the United States, despite the rich foods high in fat found in French cuisine. Many experts attribute this to the regular consmption wine in the French diet.
Some medical studies have shown that a glass of wine can reduce the risk of heart disease or stroke. Moderate wine consumption may reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, stroke and cancer. Other diseases may also be reduced by moderate wine consumption, and may very well increase their life expectancy.
Studies are being conducted on the health benefits of a glass of wine. Wine contains flavonoids, antioxidants that help to prevent free radicals from damaging cells. One in particular, helps prevent hardening of the arteries. Wine also contains a substance called reservetrol. This substance has been shown to stimulate the immune system, block cancer and protect against cardiovascular disease.
These substances are found throughout wine, but there is more red wine than white wine. The reservatrol and flavonoids are present in grape skins and stems. When making white wine, grapes are pressed, and the juice is extracted and fermented for making wine. With red wines, the grapes are pressed and the juice sit for a while with the grape skins and stems still present. Because of this, the grape juice has a chance to leach more of the flavonoids and reservatrol skin of grapes. Thus, red wines have a higher concentration of antioxidants than white.
The content of alcohol in wine may have some benefits too. Moderate consumption of alcohol can raise the level of HDL, or good cholesterol, and blood thinning. Note, this is moderate alcohol consumption. So this is not an excuse to go out and get drunk.
